A day in your life as a Bankruptcy Specialist

Under the direction/supervision of the Supervisor or Manager, this position ensures compliance with U.S. Bankruptcy Code, related laws and regulations, to ensure activity with regard to bankrupt customers is compliant and reduce exposure to legal sanctions and suits against Bank of Hawaii. This position complies with Bank of Hawaii policies and procedures as well as State and Federal requirements for the collection of debts, applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements.  Assists in business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.  In addition, this position is responsible for demonstrating the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) philosophy by participating in and practicing ESS disciplines and behaviors.


We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Has thorough knowledge and understanding of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code to ensure compliance with laws and regulations by conducting thorough reviews of all incoming bankruptcy reports and notices. Ensures bankruptcy reports, notices and forms are accurate and completed daily. Updates all Bank loan and deposit systems with proper codes, notes and forms. Consistently keeps abreast of bankruptcy laws through research, seminars and classes. Prepares reaffirmations, and proof of claims, letters, and assignments to attorneys for Lift of Stay, Proof of Claims, Stipulations and any necessary Motions or Answers to such. Manages deadlines by prioritizing and handling multiple accounts with competing time constraints. Acts as a liaison between the Bank and customers, vendors, attorneys, courts, etc., ensuring that policies and procedures are followed including compliance with federal regulations.
  • Communicates and negotiates with external and internal customers and vendors as well as bank personnel to resolve disputes, problems and complaints.  Follows for timely completion of resolutions.  Contacts bankrupt customers and attorneys to determine intentions.  Assigns accounts for repossession, foreclosure or legal action within guidelines.  Acts independently and develops innovative resolutions to delinquency within established authority and guidelines. Has understanding of payment postings and ability to read and understand payment histories.
  • Insures that processes and procedures are followed to maintain conformance to regulatory and Bank requirements, policies and guidelines.  Monitors Circulars and Standard Procedures Manuals and other internal or external documents to remain compliant with Bank of Hawaii, State and Federal regulations on collection and bankruptcy policies and procedures. 
  • Must have Microsoft Office skills. Ability to identify and evaluate potential risk and exposure. Provide customer service by handling customer calls efficiently and effectively, while resolving the customer inquiries. Escalate calls and/or problem accounts to supervisor and/or manager. Excellent verbal and written communication skills including ability to deal with conflict and interact with all levels including legal counsel, debtors, bankruptcy trustees, and judges.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned. Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.  Must be able to arrive within various destinations statewide in a timely and efficient manner.   Must be proficient in various computer software such as Microsoft Excel and Word.

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited institution; legal assistant or similar associates degree, bankruptcy certification and work experience; two year paralegal degree, bankruptcy certification and work experience; or equivalent work experience.



  • 1 - 2 years in positions of increasing responsibility in bankruptcy law office or legal-related fields, and/or 2 or more years in collections and/or high volume customer service unit.


Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) or similar software. 
  • Able to create and use simple financial models.

  • Must be analytical, detail oriented, organized. 
  • Able to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills.
  • Able to analyze financial statements. 
  • Effective and efficient team player with excellent interpersonal skills, who can also resolve problems independently. 
  • Able to work with minimal supervision and assist with training of other staff members.
  • Able to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends and evenings as needed or assigned. 
  • Must be able to provide own transportation or to operate a vehicle with a valid driver’s license, and able to commute and arrive at intended destination in a timely manner and/or as required. 
  • Must be able to travel by air.
