A day in your life as a Commercial Credit Team Leader:
Under the direction of the Commercial Banking Credit Manager, the Commercial Credit Team Leader oversees credit analysis, underwriting and portfolio management for assigned commercial banking units.  The Team Leader supervises a team of Underwriters and Analysts and is responsible for the evaluation of financial and other risks associated with business clients in order to make a credit decision, loan structuring, and making recommendations to a credit approver.  The Team Leader may approve loans within their credit authority so long as they have not underwritten the credit request. This position requires strong commercial credit skills and extensive experience.  Ensures business units compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.

  • Exercises credit guidance and administrative control over all phases of the credit analyses, underwriting, policy compliance and approval; directly or through subordinates.  Monitors credit process to ensure that responses are within acceptable service standards. Meets regularly with staff and business units to discuss credit issues and ensure satisfactory and timely servicing of client needs.  Performs deal screens with the Manager or Wholesale Credit Administrator and Primary Relationship Officers (PROs).  Structures, determines credit covenants, and/or fine-tunes credit facilities proposed by Primary Relationship Officers (PROs).  Evaluates the quality of credit analysis and write-ups in Credit Approval Memorandums (CAMs), and provides appropriate training and feedback to Underwriter, Analyst and/or PRO.
  • Leads, supervises, train, coaches and motivates staff to provide a high level of professional service which contributes to the unit and division goals and objectives.  Responsible for the management of all employees in the team including staffing and scheduling, compensation, performance management, training and development.   Goal is to attract, retain and motivate the team to achieve management business objectives and maintain a favorable employee relations climate.  Responsible for the timely and effective management of People Services forms and documents relevant to immediate staff.
  • Exercises lending authority within delegated limits; ensures that credit decisions are rendered in a consistent, reasonable, and timely manner, and ensures accuracy of risk rating.  
  • Leads select department projects under the guidance of the Manager, to contribute to the unit and division goals and objectives.
  • As necessary, prepares CAM package and written summaries, including forward looking acceptability of risks for credit-write-up. Is responsible for the accuracy of the content of these documents.

Education:  
  • Bachelors degree from an accredited institution with major in business or related area, or equivalent business and/or business credit work experience.

Experience:
  • Minimum of 10 - 12  years of commercial credit experience, with preferably at least 5 years of responsibility for sound credit decision-making; 
  • General product knowledge and operational knowledge preferred;
  • Commercial lending line experience as a Primary Relationship Officer preferred; or
  • Equivalent work experience; and
  • Two - three years of lead/supervisory/management experience also required.
  • Must have a thorough understanding of all aspects of financial statement analysis, including applicability to cash flow lending.

Technical Skills: 
  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or similar software.  
  • Requires excellent worksheet skills and good working knowledge of database programs.  
  • Knowledge of or ability to use Bank software and systems.

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills.  
  • Must have the ability to express complex ideas in concise and simple terms. 
  • Able to demonstrate strong analytical and quantitative skills, with excellent attention to detail.  
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments with changing deadlines in a high pressure environment.  
  • Able to build strong working relationships with a collaborative approach, but must also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently.  
  • Possesses good interpersonal skills and client servicing skills to meet the Banks standards.  
  • Must always follow up and follow through. 
  • Able to work flexible hours including holidays, weekends and evenings as needed or assigned.  
  • Must be able to provide own transportation or to operate a vehicle with a valid drivers license and commute in a timely manner as required. 
  • Able to travel by air as necessary.
