A day in your life as a Corporate Business Continuity Manager
Under the direction of the Executive Vice President and Director, Corporate Real Estate Group, the Corporate Business Continuity Manager is charged with the mandate of creating, executing and maintaining the Corporate Disaster Preparedness and Business Continuity Program for Bank of Hawaii Corporation (BOHC) and all of its subsidiaries to ensure that in the event of a disaster, emergency or other business interruption the company is able to resume operations and maintain customer confidence ensuring it incurs no reputation damage. Ensures business units compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.

  • Ensures the BOHC Board of Directors, Executive Management and other stakeholders are kept apprised of the companys ability to recover operations in a timely manner in the event of a disaster, emergency or business interruption so as to ensure the companys reputation is maintained. Develops and manages programs for vulnerability risk and business impact analyses and assessments of all business units, locations and operations within the company. Develops and maintains plans which identify gaps or potential weaknesses that would compromise the companys ability to resume operations and maintain customer confidence. Works with business unit management to remediate as appropriate.
  • Develops, establishes and executes the corporate business continuity program and contingency plan consistent with BOHC risk management standards, regulatory requirements and industry standards. Ensures appropriate reporting on the status of the program to all constituents including Board of Directors.
  • Provides proactive leadership and management of the Corporate Business Continuity Department and matrix management for the Committee members, Business Unit Management, Business Recovery Team Leaders and Floor Wardens. Ensures the Emergency Operations Center is maintained in a state of readiness for emergency activation. Responsible for the management of all employees in the department including staffing, scheduling, compensation, performance management, training and development. Goal is to attract, retain and motivate the team to achieve management business objectives and maintain a favorable employee relations climate. Responsible for the timely and effective management of People Services forms and documents relevant to immediate staff.
  • Develops and coordinates training programs, exercises and tests designed to evaluate the various business units ability to resume operations or respond to emergency situations. Identifies gaps or situations which potentially compromise the companys ability to recover, reports to appropriate management, with recommendations for remediation. Ensures that the business units close identified gaps. Escalates concerns to appropriate management.
  • Develops and facilitates, along with the Chair, meetings of the Business Continuity Committee comprised of executive and senior management responsible for the coordination and management of response and recovery efforts. Plans and implements testing exercises and training to ensure the Committee and Business Unit management are well prepared to reinstitute business operations in the event of a disaster, emergency or business interruption. Participates in other corporate committees to provide end to end analyses and recovery options for all possible disaster scenarios.
  • Develops appropriate communications and coordinates business recovery efforts and plans with government agencies, including regulatory bodies and vendors such as security, electric, and property managers, to ensure the company can resume operations and maintain customer confidence.
  • Activates the Business Continuity Committees first responders and advises the Committee Chair on complete activation after evaluating the emerging event. Ensures all essential personnel, plans and processes are implemented to mitigate damage to physical assets, business disruption, employee injury and loss of life. This position is considered essential for response to disaster, emergency or business interruption situation. Employee is on-call 24 hours a day/7 days a week and must carry a smartphone and/or other devices deemed appropriate.
  • Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.


This position requires use of a personal computer and other standard office equipment (typewriter, fax, copier, calculator and telephone).

  • Education: Bachelors degree in business management or related field from an accredited educational institution or equivalent work experience. Formal training at an accredited institution in contingency planning and emergency management. Professional certification in business continuity planning, emergency management or safety desired.
  • Experience: Minimum 7 years experience in the management of disaster preparedness programs some of which is at the corporate level; ability to work with and understand business unit operations in order to assist with the development of appropriate emergency response and business recovery/continuity plans.
  • Technical Skills: Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or similar software. Knowledge of or ability to use Bank software and systems.
  • Other Job Qualifications: Possesses verbal and written communication and leadership skills, ability to work effectively with all levels of management, staff members, government agencies, vendors. Project management skills; able to conduct training and exercise sessions. This position is considered essential for response to disaster situations. Employee is on-call 24 hours a day/7days a week. Must carry a smartphone and/or other devices deemed appropriate.
