A day in your life as a Credit Risk Review Officer:

Under the direction of the Manager and Deputy Manager Credit Review, this position is responsible for executing the independent credit risk review function that assists the Board of Directors and management of the Company in the effective discharge of their responsibility to maintain a continuous awareness of credit risk and the effectiveness of its management throughout the Company. Responsibilities include monitoring / testing the accuracy of assigned risk ratings; evaluating underwriting; reviewing for compliance to the company’s loan and lending policies, assessing problem asset administration; and critically evaluating the accuracy and effectiveness of credit risk management processes throughout the company.  If applicable or appropriate, assists in business unit’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to those related to Insider (Regulation O), Fair Banking, Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act. In addition, this position is responsible for demonstrating the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) philosophy by participating in and practicing ESS disciplines and behaviors.

 

We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Participates in and/or manages credit risk reviews of business units throughout the organization to evaluate asset quality, to assess the accuracy of the credit risk identification process, and to determine the reasonableness of credit underwriting, administration and documentation processes. 
  • Develops strategic credit risk assessments that determine the risk review plans; evaluates various models used for loss forecasting, portfolio stress testing and other targeted analysis; accesses and queries a multitude of databases; participates in new product development initiatives to ensure that appropriate credit risk issues are adequately addressed; identifies and communicates potential policy and/or operational improvements that will enhance credit quality; monitors and evaluates problem loan statistics to ensure that appropriate reporting of activity is occurring. 
  • Understands pertinent regulatory issues and impact on credit risk. Monitors compliance with bank policies/procedures and Federal/State laws and regulations.
  • Communicates the results of all risk reviews and monitoring activities with business unit managers.   Prepares written reports for senior management that detail the findings including a final evaluation of portfolio asset quality and credit process management. 
  • Researches, analyzes and prepares various loan quality information reports for senior management. 
  • Monitors the line-driven grading system by reviewing both loan requests and re-grade memos; validates the accuracy of risk ratings.
  • Establishes, fosters, and maintains working relationships with peers and line management within the business units to support an effective workflow while maintaining independence / objectivity.  Provides advisory assistance to lending personnel regarding risk identification, underwriting and risk management practices.
  • Assists in the analysis to determine the adequacy of the Reserve for Credit Losses.  Prepares written reports for senior management, the Board of Directors and the company’s outside auditors.
  • Benchmarks “best practices” with peer institutions and makes recommendations to incorporate them into the company’s risk management processes, as appropriate.

 

 


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent work experience, preferably with a business-related major or equivalent. 
  • Completion of a formal credit training program.

 

Experience:

  • Minimum four to six years of experience in financial services industry or with a regulatory agency; demonstrated expertise in credit risk management including commercial and/or retail lending, credit administration, or credit review.  
  • Commercial and/or consumer credit analytical skills. 
  • General working knowledge of bank regulatory laws, policies and procedures.
  • General working knowledge of bank credit policies and procedures.

 

Technical Skills:

  • Demonstrated proficiency and expertise with personal computers in a networked environment and Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint) or similar software. 
  • Knowledge of or ability to use Bank software and systems.

 

Other Job Qualifications:

  • Must possess strong credit knowledge and acumen, as well as a good understanding of the banking business and economics.
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills.
  • Able to express complex ideas in concise and simple terms.
  • Must be an effective and objective communicator, able to make formal presentations to management. 
  • Able to work effectively with department staff, as well as those outside immediate area, including Board members, external auditors and regulatory staff. 
  • Must be analytical, detail oriented, organized, and independent. 
  • Able to meet deadlines and handle multiple priorities.
  • Must be able to analyze large amounts of data quickly, draw conclusions from sometimes incomplete information and make good decisions.
  • Able to solve problems creatively and decisively.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as necessary. 
  • Able to travel to various locations and by air.
