A day in your life as a Senior Building Engineer

Under the direction of the Corporate Facilities Engineering Manager, the Senior Building Engineer is responsible for the reliable operations of all building systems within Bank of Hawaii facilities, in the State of Hawaii and West Pacific Region.  If applicable or appropriate, assists with the business unit’s compliance with applicable laws and regulations, regulatory requirements and Bank policies and procedures, including but not limited to Anti-Money Laundering laws and regulations, Bank Secrecy Act and USA PATRIOT Act.  In addition, this position is responsible for demonstrating the Excellence in Sales/Service (ESS) philosophy by participating in and practicing ESS disciplines and behavior.

We’ll give you these important responsibilities…

  • Identifies major engineering repairs and projects for BOH facilities to ensure continuous building operations are in line with Corporate Facilities’ guiding principles. Defines scope of work, develops justification, and presents to Executive Management for funding approval as needed.  Solicits bids and manages project and documentation, to ensure satisfactory job performance by selected Vendor/Service Provider and completion of work on time and within budget.
  • Periodically inspects the facilities to observe and note the material condition of structural components, mechanical and electrical systems, safety devices, weather protection measures and the effectiveness of existing maintenance.  Presents findings and makes recommendations for corrective measures to the Engineering Manager and implements the agreed upon changes. 
  • Evaluates the operation and maintenance of building systems, including air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, fire alarm and other life safety security devices, elevators, emergency power and Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) systems for all BOH facilities through site inspections and documents findings.  Monitors and improves the preventive maintenance (PM) program.  Ensures PM is thorough and completed on a timely basis. Must also be able to climb a ladder and bend behind equipment or under desks to check for electrical wiring, etc.
  • Directly manages Building Engineers and maintenance team at each BOH facility, to ensure the operation and maintenance of building systems, including air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, fire alarm and other life safety security devices, elevators, emergency power, Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), etc. are properly maintained. Develops specifications for all other building services contracts and manages vendor relationships according to the contracts. Also responsible for the performance management, training, and development of staff members.
  • Monitors energy consumption trends and helps to identify and develop energy saving opportunities and upgrades for BOH facilities.  Identifies opportunities to streamline and improve Corporate Facilities operations.  Provides input to and helps manage the annual operating budget and capital project budgets for all facilities systems-related items for the State of Hawaii and West Pacific Region.  Assists to develop and prioritize the capital and operating project budgets. Must be able to provide own transportation and arrive at various locations on a timely basis. In the event a company vehicle is used, must have a valid driver’s license.  May require travel by air, including overnight(s), to neighbor islands and West Pacific Region.   
  • Performs all other miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.

  • College degree or equivalent 5 years work experience


  • Minimum 5 – 7 years work experience managing critical function facilities, large office buildings, commercial and residential properties or similar sites, with solid knowledge of building systems. 
  • Minimum 1 – 2 years of supervisory or managerial experience. 
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years of contract/vendor management experience.

Technical Skills: 

  • This position requires the use of a personal computer and other standard office equipment (typewriter, fax, copier, calculator and telephone). 
  • Must have proficiency with Microsoft Office products including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access.

Other Job Qualifications: 

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with a solid knowledge of building systems.  
  • Ability to present information with supporting detail to executive management for approvals. 
  • Demonstrated experience working in a team-based work environment. 
  • Detail oriented with the ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Must possess organizational skills with the ability to retain and deliver information efficiently. 
  • Must be able to provide own transportation and arrive at various locations on a timely basis. 
  • May require travel, including overnight(s), to neighbor islands and to the West Pacific Region. 
  • Must be able to work holidays and weekends as needed. 
  • Must be able to climb a ladder and bend behind equipment and desks to check for electrical wiring, etc. 
  • Must be able to move materials up to 30 lbs.
